All around the world, countries are considering the possibility of issuing their currency in digital format. But wait! Don’t we have this already? For instance, we’ve all seen our money online in our bank account. Isn’t that money in digital format? Interestingly, what world governments and central bankers envision is revolutionary and very different from what we've seen before. Digital currency could lead to a world of convenience for all of us while potentially landing a crushing blow to our banking sector. In addition, there are fundamental concerns about the privacy of individuals when the government issues money in digital form and can see how we spend every dollar we own! There are many interesting issues tied to central bank digital currency as well as great urgency, given the Chinese government’s advancement of its own digital currency.
Dr. Purba Mukerji, Professor and Chair of Economics at Connecticut College, will discuss this compelling topic.
