Little Liberia with Shanna Melton

  • East Lyme Public Library 39 Society Road Niantic, CT 06357 (map)

Join us as Shanna Melton presents the history of Bridgeport’s Little Liberia. The story begins in the early 1820s, when free African-Americans created their own village in what is today the city’s South End. Initially called Ethiope, the residents renamed their community Little Liberia in 1850 as a tribute to Liberia, which gained independence in 1847 as the first African republic. Registration is required. Click here to register.
